Thousands are taking in the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony in the City, which is being held in Churchill Square this long weekend.

Organizers estimate 12,000 turned up on Friday, the first night of the event.

“Normally at this time of year we are down in Hawrelak Park doing Symphony Under the Sky but we are not this year because of the Triathlon, which is a great thing for Edmonton to get but it meant that we had to move,” ESO’s assistant director for education outreach D.P. Baker explained.

“We decided let’s take a chance and see what happens and we are overwhelmed by the turnout.”

Musicians said they too valued the opportunity to play before such a crowd.

“Our regular audience was probably there as well but it had to have been three to one people that had never been to the Winspear before so I’m thrilled about that,” french horn player Megan Evans told CTV News.

Baker said that they will be heading back to Hawrelak Park next year but, because of the success, have been talking about holding other events around the city.

“The last time I can remember this many people at an Edmonton Symphony show was when Pavarotti played Rexall Place and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra was the band.”

The free family event featured Disney music on Friday and Saturday and will be playing celtic tunes with local family The McDades in Kinsmen Park Sunday night.

“If you are coming, come early because seats are at a premium right now,” Baker warns.
