A Drayton Valley family is saying “thank you”, after the community rallied around them in a time of need.

Renee Prefontaine, her husband Kyle, and their 2-year-old son were staying in a hotel before moving into their new home, when their truck, which was filled with everything they own, was stolen from the parking lot earlier this week.

But even though the family was left with no possessions, it didn’t take long for residents in the town to come together for the family.

“I was appalled that this had happened first and people coming to Drayton to work and all of a sudden they don't have anything to work with.” Drayton Valley resident Marion Dunlop told CTV News on Sunday.

Dunlop and other residents donated clothes, household items, toys, and gift cards to the family.

Dixie Cherkowski is collecting donations for the family.

“Sure there's people that stole their vehicle but as a community we work very, very well together as a community and a very good support system. And that's what I want to portray” she said.

For the Prefontaine family, the support has been overwhelming.

“I'm still, I'm just blown away, I don't know how I will ever be able to thank all these people, ever.” Said Renee Prefontaine, “It's taking such a big burden off”.
