The trial for a man charged in a fatal hit and run in Edmonton’s downtown that took the life of a Wabasca man will begin Monday.

Darnell Belcourt has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision causing death.

The charges stem from an incident in December, 2013 where a group of five people were walking in the area of 105 Avenue and 102 Street.

According to police, a 25-year-old man in the group was hit by a van as the vehicle drove around the corner. They also said the vehicle kept going north on 102 Street.

The van was later located by police near 105 Avenue and 96 Street but it was abandoned.

The victim was taken to an Edmonton-area hospital but died two days later.

Investigators said a tip from the public helped them lay charges.

The trial will be held at Edmonton’s Court of Queen’s Bench from March 2 to 6.
