The trial of an Edmonton man charged in an international, multi-million dollar mail fraud case is set to begin Monday.

Richard Chukwu has been accused of mailing out thousands of letters to U.S. citizens claiming they won $150,000.

Attached was a cheque that victims deposited into a British bank account as an initial fee. Later, that cheque would bounce.

Police said the scheme garnered nearly $7 million with victims losing an average of $4,000.

Officials believe that Chukwu had been running the scam since 2010.

The trial is set to begin at 9 a.m. at Edmonton’s provincial court.
