Firefighters were called to a west Edmonton apartment building twice Friday morning, and officials are investigating.

An Edmonton Fire Rescue spokesperson told CTV News firefighters were first called to an apartment building on 177 Street and 64 Avenue at about 1:30 a.m., they arrived to see smoke coming from the fourth floor of the building.

The fire was under control by about 1:45, and declared out approximately 15 minutes later.

Investigators determined that fire started in the kitchen of a suite, and overheated cooking oil was the source.

Hours later, at about 5:40 a.m., firefighters were called to the same building by a resident of a fourth floor suite – crews arrived minutes later, and quickly upgraded the fire to a two-alarm blaze and fought the fire from inside and outside the building.

The fire was deemed to be under control by 6:54 a.m., and was declared out by 7:23 a.m. Residents evacuated from the building were provided shelter in ETS buses brought in by crews.

No injuries were reported in connection to either call.

Early Friday afternoon, officials said the blaze was still under investigation.
