Work is underway on the High Level Bridge to help prevent suicides.

Crews are installing new safety rails along pedestrian walkways on both sides of the bridge. The barriers are made of steel and will reach almost three metres high.

Edmonton City Council approved the project at a cost of $3 million in December 2014.

Bruno Mercier, who helped save a man’s life on the High Level Bridge two years ago, thinks the rails will help.

“I think it’s a step in the right direction, especially on this bridge,” Mercier said.

However, he said other measures still need to be taken to prevent suicide.

“The problem is if they don’t do it here, they’ll find other tools. We have to support other organizations that can really help people who get to that point.”

The walkway on the east side of the bridge will be closed until March 3. The safety rails are expected to be fully completed by June.
