The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is receiving $34.9 million from the federal government to build a 15,000-square-meter facility.

The project will cost $80 million in total. The remaining $45 million will come from philanthropists and the school’s infrastructure money.

The federal money will come from the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund – a program that will provide a total of $2 billion over the next two tears to accelerate infrastructure projects at post-secondary institutions across Canada.

This new facility will become the home of NAIT’s Shell Manufacturing Centre, and it will include manufacturing labs and space to build prototypes for small and medium-sized businesses.

“Encouraging scientific awareness in Alberta and across Canada depends on supporting our world-class scientists and researchers,” federal Minister of Infrastructure Amarjeet Sohi said. “Investments like this can help make our country among the world’s leading nations in the development and use of clean and sustainable technologies and processes, while also creating well-paying jobs for Canadians. Through the Strategic Investment Fund we are helping to strengthen the foundation for building scientific excellence in Canada.”
