The Alberta government has unveiled new licence plates with the yellow ribbon image and Support Our Troops slogan.

Government and military officials attended the announcement, which was held at the Edmonton garrison Saturday morning.

Service Alberta Minister Manmeet Bhullar said the licences were a gesture of appreciation to those in uniform.

“This is a small token of our admiration of their strength and their courage and a salute to their families.

“There is no greater calling than serving ones’ nation and having the commitment that can lead to the ultimate sacrifice is the most profound of human callings,” he added.

Officials said the new plates will be available for pre-order early in 2014 at a cost of $150.

The fee includes regular registration fees as well as production and delivery charges. Any remaining proceeds will go to the Support Our Troops campaign.

Minister Bhullar said the plates will be a reminder of the contributions that those in the Canadian Forces have given to the country and to the province.

The licence plates are in addition to the veterns’ plates, released in 2005, which feature a poppy in honour of those who serve in the forces or police departments that work with NATO or the UN.

According to government statistics, about 21,000 veterans’ plates have been issued.
