In a move that will bring an end to a more than two week strike by registered nurses working at a south side seniors care residence – officials said an agreement has been reached between the employer and the union.

United Nurses of Alberta said early Wednesday afternoon that a Memorandum of Agreement had been signed between the UNA and Park Place Seniors Living, the company that operates Devonshire Care Centre.

The union said the agreement was reached with help from a provincially-appointed mediator, and was signed by both sides late Tuesday.

Members of the UNA Local 417 are expected to vote on the agreement Thursday.

Both the employer and the union is recommending the agreement be ratified.

Union officials said the RNs employed at Devonshire Care Centre will receive pay comparable to other RNs employed by the same company at other facilities, and with UNA’s current Provincial Agreement at the end of the term of the agreement.

Picket lines outside of the Devonshire Care Centre have been suspended.

Fifteen registered nurses are employed at the Devonshire Care Centre – and they served strike notice on Dec. 27.

The move came after a year and a half of bargaining with the employer.

The nurses voted overwhelmingly in favour of going on strike on Dec. 14, but put off taking action until after Christmas, so the care of residents would not be affected.

They walked off the job on New Year’s Eve.
