Alberta Environment has reassured residents about the quality of drinking water after a coal mine dumped muddy water in the Athabasca River near Hinton.

Officials said residents may notice a difference in colour of the water downstream from the Obed Mountain Coal Mine but the quality of water will not be affected.

According to reports, the incident happened Thursday night about 30 kilometers east of Hinton.

A pit containing coal and process water broke, with a large part of the mixture being released into the river.

The Alberta Energy Regulator said they have been investigating the incident.
