City of Edmonton officials are investigating what they believe may have been behind flooding in a south side neighbourhood, after a massive thunderstorm struck earlier this week.
Residents living in the area of 62 Avenue and 111 Street in Parkallen woke up Wednesday morning to flooding in the road – it was knee deep in some areas, and the rising water level even set off car alarms of vehicles parked in the street.
A number of basements in the surrounding area were also flooded.
Crews dealing with the aftermath of the deluge pulled chunks of asphalt and concrete, which, combined with leaves and other debris plugged a drainage pipe measuring 20 centimetres across.
As a result of the blockage, officials are investigating how the asphalt and concrete ended up in the pipe – a spokesperson told CTV News the pieces could have fallen through a grate, or they may have been left behind after construction work.
The flooding lasted several hours on Wednesday – but was dry by midday Thursday, however, a number of residents are still dealing with water in their basements.
