Hours after Edmonton police started investigating an alleged online threat made against MacEwan University, officers said a male suspect was in custody.

Edmonton police said officers went to a residence in Sherwood Park at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, and arrested a 19-year-old male in relation to the threat.

Charges are pending against that suspect.

Early Tuesday morning, police said they received reports of the threat, made on social media, and advised officials at MacEwan University.

MacEwan was not placed on lockdown as a result of the threat - but an e-mail message was used to notify students.

Some students said they waited for a text message through the university’s alert system, but that message never came in.

“That system is used when there’s an imminent threat to anybody on campus when they get that message, we want immediate action,” Raymond Boudreau with MacEwan said.

As a suspect is in custody, police said there is no further risk to the school or public related to the incident.
