An Edmonton woman has been recovering in hospital after being attacked by a group of dogs.

Police said the 54-year-old woman was walking her small dog in an alley near 112 Avenue and 101 Street around 9 a.m. Sunday.

According to Staff Sgt. Randy Wickins, it was then that the woman was surrounded and attacked by a pack of medium to large size dogs.

“The commotion and the woman’s screams were heard by a man in a yard nearby. He went to check and see what was going on,” Wickins explained.

“He ran down the alley and started yelling at the dogs and essentially scaring the dogs or at least distracting the dogs.”

That Good Samaritan, Jeremy Christensen, said the dogs then turned on him.

“They chased me. I ran on top of my car. I went on the roof of my car.

“They were growling and walking around the car but they didn’t stay long. They left fairly quickly and went back to the yard.”

Christensen said he then got into his car and drove into the back alley to rescue the woman.

“I pulled up beside the lady in my car and opened my passenger door. I said ‘You gotta get in, you gotta get in’ because their gate was still open. Their dogs could still come out.”

“As far as I am concerned he saved her life,” Wickins said.

The woman was treated by paramedics for multiple bite wounds and then taken to hospital where she remains in serious but stable condition.

According to Wickins her small dog was also injured.

“She doesn’t look in too serious condition but was taken to the emergency vet clinic for treatment.”

Animal Control Officers have apprehended four dogs believed to be involved from a residence in the area and the owner told CTV News he was flabbergasted.

“They roughhouse with each other but other than that they have never ever bit anybody or nothing. I have people come over to my house all the time and hang out and never had an issue like this,” Aaron Copeland explained.

“They just play fight. Other than that they are great dogs.”

Copeland said three of the animals are Akita StaffordshireTerriers and the fourth one, who belongs to a friend, is a great Pyrenees lab.

He said he has had the dogs for four years and has not had a problem before.

“I have an 11-month old son that roams around the house all day climbing all over the dogs and they don’t even growl or nothing at him.”

Copeland said he was told the dogs will be kept by investigators for 10 to 21 days but he hoped to get them back.

“I really don’t care how big of a fine or what I have to pay as long as I get my dogs back I am happy.

“I don’t want my dogs put down because I don’t feel they are a danger.”

Police said they will be working with Animal Control in the investigation to determine whether charges will be laid.
