Edmonton police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Edmonton Institution late Thursday night.

According to police, detectives and paramedics were called to the facility, after a homicide was reported at the Edmonton Max at 10 p.m. Thursday when an inmate was found unresponsive in his cell.

Canada Corrections said staff began performing CPR, but when emergency crews arrived, the inmate couldn’t be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy was conducted Friday, although detectives said they would not be releasing the cause of death.

Police identified the deceased as Ryan Holteen, 32 – whose four year, two month sentence for charges that included break and enter and robbery with a firearm had started August 28, 2013.
