Edmonton police have issued a warning over the release of a convicted violent offender, who is believed to be a risk to offend.

Police said Leanne Whitford is a transgender woman, who was formerly known as Ian.

Whitford is expected to live in the Edmonton-area, and EPS said they are seeking a recognizance order on Whitford, and she will be closely monitored by the Behavioural Assessment Unit.

She has been placed on a number of court ordered conditions as well, including: a curfew of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, she can’t travel outside of Edmonton without written permission, she can’t buy, possess or consume alcohol or drugs, including marijuana, she can’t enter establishments whose primary source of income is from the sale or consumption of alcohol, she can’t participate in the sex trade industry, and she can’t go to known high-risk areas.

Whitford, 35, is described as:

  • 180 cm (5’11”) tall
  • 72 kg (about 160 lbs)
  • Brown eyes
  • Brown hair

The warning was issued by police after careful deliberation of related issues, including privacy concerns; in the belief it is in the public interest to inform members of the community. It is meant to enable citizens to take precautions, and is not intended to encourage any form of vigilante action.
