Edmonton police have made an arrest in an early morning shooting fatality.

Around 12:40 a.m., officers responded to reports of a man suffering from gunshot wounds at a condo building near 105 Street and 155 Avenue in Edmonton's Beaumaris neighbourhood.

They discovered a 21-year-old male victim dead from a gunshot wound in a suite.

"I looked out the window and there was lot of police," said neighbour Ashlee MacDouell. “There was a young male clearly distraught crying yelling clearly distraught."

At first, police were told three suspects were responsible for the shooting – but later on, investigators said that story was fabricated.

“It was reported that three black males had broken in at the residence and shot a male inside the residence right behind me here,” Staff Sgt. Bill Clark said. “We have now determined that was false information we were given at the time."

A 19-year-old friend of the victim – believed to be the young distraught man – was taken into custody later Thursday in what Clark attributed to people in the home playing with a firearm. A teenaged girl was also believed to be in the home at the time of the shooting.

“We believe at this time that this is just a case of some bad decisions by these people in this house, playing with a firearm,” Clark said.

Clark said there is evidence that drugs and alcohol were being used at the time of the shooting – but there’s no indication of a dispute or argument taking place.
