Edmonton police have been investigating a two-vehicle collision that blocked southbound traffic on Wayne Gretzky Drive Saturday morning.

Officials said they responded to the area of Wayne Gretzky Drive and 101 Avenue around 6:10 a.m.

Investigators said they believe a Nissan and a Subaru had been street racing when the Subaru rolled.

“Two southbound vehicles were travelling at a high rate of speed. One of them lost control,” Acting Sgt. Rick Evans explained.

“One went up on a guardrail, one veered off down the embankment.”

One of the drivers was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Sgt. Evans said no other injuries were reported.

Although police do not believe alcohol was a factor, they said speed did play a part.

“Witnesses say one vehicle was travelling exceptionally fast.”

Police closed down the southbound lanes of Wayne Gretzky Drive between 101 and 106 Avenues while they investigated.
