Weeks after the provincial government tabled Budget 2015, PC Leader Jim Prentice said a PC Government would backtrack on a reduction made in that budget.

Prentice said Tuesday that after hearing from voters, he had reconsidered the reduction to the charitable donation tax credit, and if his party was elected to govern, the previous rate would remain the same.

“Hearing from Albertans during this campaign, it’s become clear that this choice was more than simply unpopular,” Prentice said in a news release. “Rather, Albertans have told me it was seen as contrary to our values as Albertans.”

In the budget, the government said the tax credit would be reduced to 12.75 percent, from 21 percent, for donations of more than $200. When the budget was released in March, the government said it would save about $90 million annually.

Prentice said Tuesday that leaving the rate the same wouldn’t impact the timeline for balancing the budget.
