After reports of a problem with flies in parts of a west Edmonton hospital surfaced, officials at the facility said they were dealing with the issue.

Staff members at the Misericordia Hospital have reputedly noticed a swarm of flies at the Family Medicine Centre in the west annex of the hospital.

Health Minister Stephen Mandel said he expects the issue will be resolved.

“It goes to the heart of some of the challenges at the [Misericordia] and what needs to be done there,” Mandel said. “This could be an isolated problem of something inside the particular clinic that’s evolved, and I think they will look for it on the weekend.”

Jan Schimpf, the Senior Operating Officer of Acute Services at the hospital issued a statement Friday in connection to the issue:

“We do not believe the flies pose a health or safety risk to our patients or staff. We are consulting with Public Health. We involved infection prevention and pest control immediately when the flies first appeared and implemented an action plan. This weekend pest control experts will treat the interior and exterior of the building when the clinic closed to the public to resolve the issue. The clinic is expected to reopen as usual on Monday.”

On Friday, Covenant Health said pest control was expected to deal with the problem over the coming weekend, when the clinic is closed.
