The Alberta Government announced Friday that it was putting millions of dollars into the Valley Line LRT.

The province said it was providing a $176 million grant to the City of Edmonton for the southeast leg of the LRT line – after it was provided to the city as an interest-free loan in 2014.

The loan will be converted into a grant. Officials said the funds are coming from revenues from the Climate Leadership Plan.

“Investing in LRT and other green infrastructure projects makes sense,” Transportation Minister Brian Mason said. “It creates the opportunity to adapt the impacts of climate change, while supporting economic diversification and job creation.”

The line will stretch 13 kilometres between downtown and Mill Woods

The Alberta Government has committed more than $600 million to the Valley Line LRT. The project is expected to cost $1.8 billion.
