A man has been arrested and charged in the death of his common-law wife.

RCMP said they have charged Ryan Seniantha, 34, with murder, unlawful confinement, kidnapping and enter to commit assault after the remains of his common-law wife were found in a remote rural area of Assumption.

Officers initially responded to a call from the Dene T’ah First Nation of a domestic violence complaint at 2 a.m. on July 10.

Authorities said that when officers arrived at the home they learned that a woman had been forcibly taken from the residence by her common-law husband, Seniantha.

Officers located a vehicle involved in the incident at a remote area and with the assistance of a police dog they located the body of the woman.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued for Seniantha’s arrest on July 11. That afternoon, Seniantha was arrested in Assumption without incident.

He remains in police custody while he waits for a bail hearing.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death has been scheduled for July 14 in Edmonton.

At the request of her family, the woman’s identity will not be released.

Officials said there had been a history of domestic violence in the relationship.

Edmonton RCMP Major Crimes Unit has been assisting in the investigation.
