Red Deer RCMP have charged a teen after he allegedly made shooting threats on Facebook.

Police said they were advised on April 4 by Calgary City Police about online threats the young man made about wanting to commit a shooting at a Red Deer high school.

The youth, whose name cannot be released, has been charged with uttering threats, breach of probation and possession of a controlled substance.

The superintendent of Red Deer Public Schools said he hopes the young student will undergo psychological testing.

“It appears there was no imminent danger and so the concern certainly is around what would make a young person make these types of threats against fellow students and staff members of our schools,” Piet Langstraat explained.

He called social media a double-edged sword and said many teens don’t realize how public their postings are.

“It provides great avenues of communication but unfortunately also leads to instances like this.”
