Two people have died following a three-vehicle collision in central Alberta.

Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to the incident on the bridge deck of the Medicine River crossing of Highway 766, two kilometres south of Eckville, around 5:30 p.m Friday.

Investigators said that a southbound Chevrolet pickup truck crossed the centre line and hit a northbound Nissan Armada SUV head-on.

A Ford Windstar heading northbound also hit the Chevrolet shortly after the initial collision.

The 46-year-old driver of the pickup was ejected from the truck and officials said they don’t believe he was wearing his seatbelt.

The driver of the Nissan SUV, a 30-year-old woman from Condor, Alberta, was the second victim.

A 56-year-old female passenger in the SUV was extracted from the vehicle and taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials have not released the names of the victims.

No one in the Ford was injured.

Police continue to investigate but said they believe alcohol may have played a role.
