Police in northern Alberta are investigating a fatal highway collision that took place over the weekend.

RCMP in Grande Prairie said at about 11 p.m. Sunday, officers and paramedics were called to a collision on Highway 40, about 20 kilometres south of Ainsworth Lumber Co.

A transport truck and a pickup truck were involved in the collision – and the male driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic in the area had to be diverted around the scene of the crash for several hours, the highway reopened at about 6:30 a.m. Monday.

It’s believed the pickup truck crossed the centre line, hitting the larger vehicle that was headed in the other direction.

RCMP said the deceased is a 29-year-old Grande Prairie man, his name is not being released at this time.
