RCMP in northern Alberta said the investigation was underway into a fatal highway collision early Monday morning.

Wood Buffalo RCMP said officers were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 63 near the Borealis Camp Monday, at about 4:30 a.m.

Police said the crash killed a 52-year-old man, the driver and only person inside the vehicle.

Investigators said the sport utility vehicle had been travelling north on the highway when it left the road, hit the ditch, and rolled a number of times.

The man was not wearing a seatbelt, police said, and was still in the vehicle when RCMP arrived at the scene.

Police said the investigation continued, and police had found alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors in the crash.

Due to the crash, parts of Highway 63 had to be closed, but were reopened a few hours later.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.
