Police in northern Alberta are investigating, after a teenaged boy was shot and killed on New Year’s Eve.

RCMP were called to a residence on the Driftpile First Nation, near Faust, Alberta at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, December 31.

Officers from RCMP detachments in Faust and High Prairie, along with Lake Shore Regional Police and paramedics from High Prairie arrived to find a 15-year-old boy suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The teen was rushed to hospital in High Prairie, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered.

RCMP said investigators with the Edmonton Major Crime and Forensic Identification Units are investigating.

An autopsy, completed by the Medical Examiner in Edmonton determined the teen died as a result of a gunshot wound, and the case was a homicide.

Later, police said Blake Francis Giroux, 21, has been charged with second degree murder and aggravated assault.

Giroux is on custody.
