RCMP out of Edmonton are investigating a shooting incident in northern Alberta, that left a man suffering with ultimately fatal gunshot wounds.

Officers were called to the reported shooting, in a home located on Highway 754 on the Big Stone Cree Nation near Desmarais, Alberta at about midnight on Monday, July 30.

When they arrived, police and emergency responders found a man in his early 20s, suffering from a gunshot wound.

The man was taken to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

“The investigation is still very much in it’s preliminary stages,” Staff Sgt. Shawn LeMay said in a press release. “It is not certain at this time if the victim in this tragic incident was the intended target.

“Our investigators are speaking to witnesses, looking at every possibility, and are not ruling anything out.”

The RCMP Special Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation – and are utilizing a number of units to help in their investigation, including the Police Dog Service.

At last word, no arrests had been made, and police have not released the identity of the deceased.
