Officials with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said an RCMP officer from the Fort Saskatchewan detachment was facing a number of charges related to an off-duty firearms incident.

Police said RCMP became aware of the allegations against Cst. Stephen Hudson on April 22, and contacted ASIRT to investigate.

ASIRT said the Director of Law Enforcement directed officials to investigate “serious and sensitive allegations” in relation to Cst. Hudson on April 23.

That day, search warrants were executed on Hudson’s home – as a result of those searches, he was arrested and charged with a number of firearm-related offences.

Hudson has been charged with unlawful possession of a Bushmaster .223 calibre assault rifle, which is a restricted weapon, and the careless storage of that weapon. He was also charged with the unlawful possession of a .22 calibre rifle, and its careless storage.

In addition, ASIRT said Hudson has also been charged with the unlawful transfer of his 9mm service pistol, and improper storage.

Officials said he’s also facing charges of possession of an unlicensed restricted firearm, along with accessible ammunition. ASIRT also seized a number of illegal cartridge magazines, and has been charged with possession of a prohibited device.

RCMP said Hudson joined in 2009 – he’s been suspended with pay and his status will be reviewed. Police said this is standard RCMP procedure, and is not disciplinary.

ASIRT said Hudson went before a Justice of the Peace, and was released with conditions.
