The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) announced Thursday that a criminal investigation into sexual assault allegations had resulted in charges laid against an RCMP officer.

ASIRT officials were prompted to investigate July 15, 2016, over allegations of sexual assault on a woman, involving an RCMP officer.

As that investigation was underway, ASIRT learned of allegations stemming from two unrelated incidents, and investigated the circumstances surrounding those incidents as well.

ASIRT said two of the three incidents took place while the officer in question was on duty.

After the investigation, it was determined criminal charges were warranted.

On March 29, RCMP Const. Jason Tress was arrested and charged with:

  • A charge of sexual assault and a charge of criminal breach of trust, stemming from the first investigation involving one woman, connected to an incident that took place in 2016
  • One count of breach of trust in connection to a separate case, involving another woman, which also happened in 2016
  • A charge of sexual assault involving a third woman, connected to an unrelated case dating back to 2012

Tress was released on an undertaking, with conditions to appear in court in Red Deer on April 12.
