Police in northern Alberta said a man was in custody, after they tried to stop a vehicle Tuesday night, and a police cruiser was rammed.

Grande Prairie RCMP said on Tuesday, at about 9 p.m., police tried to stop a vehicle that was reportedly driving erratically in the city. As they tried to make the stop, officers learned the suspect driver had made threats to shoot a police officer.

RCMP tried to contain the suspect and the vehicle at a gas station in the area of Mission Heights Drive and 84 Avenue – but the suspect rammed a police vehicle, and tried to assault an officer at the scene.

In an attempt to subdue the suspect, other officers used a conducted energy weapon – which allowed officers to arrest the suspect.

The suspect was taken to hospital as a precaution; two officers were also taken to hospital for minor injuries.

RCMP said the suspect is a 28-year-old man from Smith, and he’s facing a number of charges.
