Alberta RCMP are warning the public about a new street drug that’s been found in at least one Edmonton-area high school.

Police say a concerned parent informed them about a street drug making its way through a Leduc High School.

Officers confirm two teenagers from that area were hospitalized last month after consuming the narcotic called 2CI or ‘Smiles’ that can come in many different forms.

“It’s very serious because when we start to see hospitalizations and we don’t know what the drug is comprised of yet, then it’s very serious,” said Beaumont RCMP Corp. Darcy McGunigal.

“It can be difficult to physically detect because it is a colourless substance. It’s difficult to actually see if its there. The best steps I think a parent can take is to talk to their children and warn them of the potential dangers of this.”

Police describe 2CI as a “feel good” narcotic that acts as a stimulant and hallucinogenic.

“It’s a colourless, fluid substance that’s placed on paper tabs and placed on users mouths,” McGunigal said.

2CI is often sold as LSD and be taken as liquid on paper. It can also be made in a powder or pill form, and passed off as ecstasy.

McGunigal said he has not seen 2CI in the area until recently.

RCMP say 2CI has been seized in Leduc and Beaumont and has also turned up in Stony Plain and have been sent to a lab for examination.
