An Alberta government spokesperson told CTV News Monday that roads in east Edmonton had been reopened, after they were impacted by an over-height load struck an overpass Sunday.

Officials said a backhoe excavator headed northbound on Anthony Henday Drive in the centre lane hit the Whitemud Drive overpass on Sunday evening.

The impact damaged five girders; the one that sustained the most damage was the first girder on the eastbound overpass. Four girders were also damaged on the westbound structure.

Edmonton police and RCMP officers, along with Alberta Transportation officials were on the scene a short time later, and conducted an initial investigation.

Each girder was inspected, and loose concrete removed – a mesh casing has also been installed to catch any loose pieces, and keep them from falling on the roadway below.

The province said there were no structural safety issues with the bridge, and all related roads had been opened to drivers.

Officials are set to finish up reviewing the investigation report, and determine what is needed to complete repairs.
