The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume Tanimura & Antle brand romaine lettuce over concerns the product may be contaminated with E. coli.

The affected product bears the UPC 0 27918 20314 9 and was sold from August 8 to August 17 in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nunavut and the Yukon.

There have been no reported illnesses but the Canadian distributers are voluntarily recalling the affected product.

The CFIA says food contaminated with E. coli may not look or smell spoiled but consumption of the contaminated lettuce may cause “serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.”

Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea.

Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis as a result of consuming the contaminated product.
