Officials are reminding students to take precautions, after a student was reportedly attacked on her way to a bus stop Monday.

According to officials, a female Grade 8 student left Westminster School on Monday, after class – and was on her way to a nearby bus stop, when she was approached by someone wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

It was reported the individual hit the girl – police said the suspect had an object, but wouldn’t say if it was a weapon – and the girl was knocked down.

It’s alleged the suspect went through her backpack before leaving empty-handed.

The incident was reported the next day – and police are investigating. The girl suffered some scrapes and bruising in the incident.

As a result of the incident, several schools in the area have sent notes home with students for parents – and the school district is reminding students to be careful.

“So, this is a reminder to parents, talk to your kids, teach them to be aware of their surroundings,” Jane Sterling with Edmonton Public Schools said. “If they can, walk with a friend or a group of friends.

“It happens, and it’s an opportunity to remind people about being safe.”

Police said the alleged attacker was using the hooded sweatshirt to conceal his identity, so they don’t have a good description, and there are no reports of arrests or suspects.
