Officials with the City of Edmonton said Thursday that school zones with slower speed limits were set to go into effect throughout the city starting early next week.

As of September 2, school zones with a lower speed limit will be in effect at Edmonton elementary schools.

The speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour will apply between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on school days, where signs are posted.

A report submitted to a city committee earlier this year found school zones abolished in Edmonton in the 1970s - something at least one Councillor said should not have happened.

"I don't know why school zones were ever eliminated to be honest with you," Ward 3 Councillor Dave Loken said. "I always thought it was the dumbest thing I ever heard, they should've never been taken out to begin with."

Edmonton police told CTV News there will be a grace period to start, with officers handing out warnings instead of tickets.

To coincide with the school zone additions, the City of Edmonton has launched an awareness campaign, including a website and TV spots.
