Over the next year, a number of locations in Edmonton and Calgary will serve as the testing ground for scratch ticket vending machines.

The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) said twenty Instant Ticket Vending Machines will be installed in twenty locations in Edmonton and Calgary, and surrounding areas.

Officials said the pilot will be used to see if Albertans are interested in using the machines to buy scratch lottery tickets.

To use the machines, a customer would scan the barcode on their driver’s licence to prove they are 18-years-old, or older – officials said the machines only scan the licence, and don’t retain information about the person using it.

The cash-only machines will sell tickets ranging from $1 to $30 – and don’t give change.

The machines will be installed between Monday, September 21 and Friday, October 9.
