Days after a deadly plant explosion left a man in his 50s dead; a second man who was injured in the incident has died in hospital.

Occupational Health and Safety confirmed to CTV News that the 30-year-old man injured in an explosion on the Nexen Long Lake Plant on Friday, January 15 had died in hospital.

He had been taken to hospital in Fort McMurray in critical condition – officials said he suffered serious burns, and was eventually taken to a burn unit in Edmonton.

This is the second death connected to the recent explosion – a 52-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene that day.

In the days following the explosion, CTV News learned the two men were working inside a building on the Nexen site near Fort McMurray when the explosion happened.

Nexen’s senior vice-president of Canadian operations said the men were maintenance workers, and OHS said they were changing valves on a compressor at the time of the blast.
