The City of Edmonton and Enoch Cree Nation announced Friday that a section of a roadway on the city’s south side had been renamed.

Now, 23 Avenue between 215 Street and Anthony Henday Drive is called Maskêkosihk Trail.

The announcement was made Friday at Edmonton’s City Hall, with elders from the Enoch Cree First Nation and Mayor Don Iveson in attendance for the ceremonial name-changing.

The name, pronounced ‘Muss-Kay-Go-See’ according to the City, pays respect to the Treaty 6 land Edmonton and the Enoch Cree Nation sits on.

“It’s also a reminder of this history, of the culture and also an opportunity for indigenous Edmontonians to stay connected with culture and language right here in our city,” Iveson said.

Enoch First Nation Chief Billy Morin said he hopes the renaming will be a major step in reconciliation.

“When we look back in 20 years and my son, our kids and our grandkids driving that road, that’s where it all started, that’s where reconciliation started within ourselves and with the public, that’s why it’s big,” Morin said.
