Nearly a week after a bizarre fall put a young Sherwood Park boy in hospital, teammates and friends of the 10-year-old are rallying around the family.

Last weekend, Ethan Lockwood was playing street hockey with his friends, when he tripped and fell into a bush.

A branch went through his eye and pierced his brain, Ethan has been in hospital ever since.

"A millimetre one way or a millimetre the other way, it could have been a different outcome," Lockwood's coach Rick Rishaug said.

Support for Ethan and his family has come from hundreds in the past week.

It's estimated about three hundred people have signed a banner to support Ethan in his recovery.

"I want him to know we're all supporting him," Teammate Samuel Schweitzer said. "And that we all hope he gets better soon."

Ethan has spent most of the last several days in the Intensive Care Unit at the Stollery Children's Hospital.

At this time, he is unable to move parts of his body, or fully communicate.

CTV News has learned his doctors are still hopeful he'll make a full recovery, but his future is still unclear.

"We're concerned about mobility issues on [his] left side, especially because it was a right side brain injury," Family friend Paul Alpern told CTV News. "We're concerned about cognitive impairment,

"But he's a strong kid, and he's got tones of support from family, friends and [the] community."

Support has also come from dozens of other minor hockey teams, who plan on wearing a decal to their helmets that features Ethan's number and his initials.

"This is our way of honouring Ethan when we're playing, when we're practicing," Rishaug said. "Just to remember that he's not with us on the ice, but he's here with us all the time,

"We're just always thinking about him."

There's no doubt the team will be thinking of Ethan when they take to the ice for the first time without him this weekend, and his jersey will hang in the locker room as a reminder until he returns.

"We're just gonna work really hard for him, and keep on winning until he comes back," Teammate Logan Cyca said. "We'll have a good time when he comes back."
