Firefighters across the province battle to teach residents the benefits of working smoke alarms.

The theme of this year’s edition of Fire Prevention Week, held October 4 to 10, is “hear the beep where you sleep” and firefighters are encouraging everyone to have operational smoke detectors near their bedrooms.

According to the City of St. Albert Fire and Rescue Services, roughly half of home fire deaths result from blazes reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep.

Officials said alarms cut the chances of people dying in a reported fire in half because of how quickly smoke can spread.

The key message is to install smoke alarms outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home – including the basement.

Fire Prevention Week kicked-off Sunday, with many fire halls in Alberta, including St. Albert Fire Hall No.3, holding open houses.
