Officials with the Canadian Armed Forces announced Thursday that a soldier had died, and another was injured, after an incident at the CFB Wainwright earlier in the week.

According to officials, Private Steven Allen, 20, of Victoria, and another soldier were inside a “tactical structure” when it collapsed during an exercise on November 3.

CAF spokesperson Fraser Logan described the structure as a lookout.

“About 10 feet off the ground on top of a sea can, and that structure on top of the sea can, made of plywood or plywood and sandbags,” Logan said. “This is just to provide a bit of shelter, but it is open to the elements, and that structure collapsed.”

Allen was airlifted to the University of Alberta Hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident,” Lieutenant-Colonel Sean Trenholm, commanding officer of the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre said in a press release. “Our immediate focus is to provide support to the family of Private Allen and ensure members of the unit are provided the assistance they need to deal with the loss of their comrade.”

Canadian Armed Forces officials said Allen was recruited in Victoria in October, 2013 – and completed basic training in February, 2014. He had not served overseas.

Defence Minister Rob Nicholson released a statement Thursday in response to news of Allen’s death:

“Pte Allen, who completed his Basic Military Qualification in February of this year, was training at 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre to become a fully-qualified Regular Force Infantry soldier at the time of the accident.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and the friends of Pte. Allen and those affected by this tragedy, including all base personnel.

“I also offer my prayers for a speedy recovery to the second soldier injured in the same accident.

“The loss of any soldier is devastating to the military community. An investigation will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding this incident to ensure that every precaution is taken to protect the safety and security of our soldiers.”

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is looking into the incident – and no further details can be released at this time.

The name of the injured soldier can’t be released due to privacy concerns – he reportedly suffered minor injuries in the incident.
