A Suncor spokesperson responded to reports late Thursday that a fire had broken out in at least one of its sites Thursday afternoon, saying crews were dealing with the fallout from a power outage.

Spokesperson Sneh Seetal said reports of a fire were inaccurate – there was increased flaring as a result of a power outage at Suncor’s Oil Sands and Firebag sites.

In a statement, Seetal said Suncor had responded to the outage at the two sites, located about 25 and 200 kilometres north of Fort McMurray respectively just after 5 p.m. Thursday.

“At this time, the cause of the power loss is unknown. There will be increased flaring as we respond. We have initiated our emergency response plan and have a team working to resolve the situation,” Seetal said.

Seetal also said employees and contractors had been evacuated while crews dealt with the situation.

By Thursday evening, no injuries had been reported.
