Edmonton police said a male suspect had been arrested in connection to the theft of a police vehicle early Thursday morning.

Police said officers were called to the area of 132 Avenue and 113 A Street at about 5:30 a.m., after a woman reported she had been approached and threatened by a man as she drove her car.

The woman had driven away from the man, and called police.

The EPS Canine Unit was dispatched, and found the suspect in the area. He managed to evade officers and stole a police service vehicle.

The suspect drove the stolen car westbound on 132 Avenue – was then seen heading eastbound on 137 Avenue, where it’s believed the driver tried to turn left onto 113 A Street.

The car hit a tree in the northeast corner of the intersection; the suspect was arrested and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

However, the suspect was found with his pants around his ankles, and police said they were not sure why that happened.

“Clearly, it’s not every day that we see a police vehicle stolen and operated by an individual, and right now we don’t know why, what the motivation was and also what went down there,” Sgt. Steve Sharpe said. “So that’ll be part of the investigation.”

Police are investigating the incident, and charges are pending.
