Around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, RCMP responded to a report of shots being fired inside a home on Garneau Gate in Spruce Grove.

On arriving at the residence, officers heard what appeared to be additional shots. The area surrounding the home was secured, and nearby residents asked to stay in their basements until the situation was over.

Meanwhile, school children that would have been dropped off in the area by school buses were taken to another school, where parents were told to pick them up.

“A potentially serious situation prompts that type of caution until we know what we are dealing with,” RCMP Insp. Gibson Glavin said.

Soon after police arrived, two women inside safely left the home, police started negotiating with a man still inside.

Around 6:20 p.m., RCMP safely entered the home and arrested the man without incident. Police said the man was suffering from a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital in serious condition.

RCMP said they did not discharge any weapons during the event.

“I don’t have the nature of those injuries or how they were sustained, all I can say is there were no police shots fired or interaction with him with those injuries,” Glavin said.

Police say the man had at least two firearms in his possession inside the home.

No charges have been laid in the case, but RCMP continue to investigate.
