Just over a day after an RCMP officer was injured during a highway traffic stop, police confirmed a man had been arrested in connection to the case.

An RCMP spokesperson said Thursday evening that one man had been arrested shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

No identifying details on the suspect were released.

RCMP said on Wednesday afternoon after 3:30, a Spirit River RCMP officer was responding to reports of an erratic driver on the highway near Wanham, Alberta – in the area of Highways 733 and 49, just over 100 kilometres north of Grande Prairie.

Officials said the suspect vehicle was stopped, and an altercation took place – before the suspect fled the scene, leaving the officer injured.

More officers arrived a short time later, and the injured constable was airlifted by STARS air ambulance to hospital in Grande Prairie.

Police remained tight-lipped on additional details in the case Thursday, but shed a little more light on the officer’s condition – saying he was in stable condition, and was speaking.

“Our usual procedure is when a vehicle is stopped there is information provided to dispatch as to location where the vehicle is stopped, as to license plate, etc.” RCMP spokesperson Josee Valiquette said. “In this case I don’t know what happened to the incident.”

Police are still investigating.

The investigation continues, RCMP ask that anyone with information to contact the Spirit River RCMP Detachment complaint line at 780-864-3533 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.ca.
