The United Cabbies Association of Edmonton protested Uber in the capital city Wednesday, with a convoy that started on the south side, and ended at City Hall.

Uber, a ride-sharing app that connects Uber drivers with potential passengers, has been operating in Edmonton since mid-December, 2014.

However, the service is unlicensed, and some believe it’s a dangerous way to get around.

“The city taxi industry is a regulated industry and they must stop this illegal activity in the city,” Balraj Manhas with the United Cabbies Association of Edmonton said.

“They don’t have proper insurance, that’s a big thing, they don’t have a commercial driver’s licence.”

The association said Uber vehicles are also not inspected.

“The bylaw is in place that no other municipality or unlicensed taxi company can work in the City of Edmonton, so they should implement the bylaw,” Manhas said.

City of Edmonton officials said unlicensed drivers with Uber have been ticketed.

"It’s about protecting that public service, it’s about providing a standard of service that the citizens have come to expect," Scott Mackie with the City of Edmonton said.

The matter is set to go before City Council next week.
