An Alberta teacher was convicted and sentenced Monday for a number of charges stemming from an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Brett Daniel Mittelsteadt, 33, was a teacher and basketball coach at Holy Redeemer School in Ardrossan.

Back in early February, 2015, he was charged with a number of sexual offences amid allegations he had an inappropriate relationship with a female student.

On Monday in an Edmonton courtroom, his 14-year-old victim told court she now battles eating disorders and is emotionally scarred.

Her family released a statement about the teacher:

“We realize too often, those accused walk free, and those victimized carry on without justice served. This was not the case today…we are grateful for that…we feel this criminal did not make a mistake, but finally got brave enough to act out his intentions.”

Mittelsteadt was sentenced to two years in jail, and has a number of conditions including he’ll become a registered sex offender, and he’s barred from contacting the victim once he’s released.
