A poll released Thursday by ThinkHQ has found that support for the Alberta Government’s Climate Leadership Plan has waned since December, 2015.

According to the results, 53 percent of Albertans polled disapprove the Climate Leadership plan, and 37 percent approve.

Compared to another poll in December, 2015, support has dropped 7 percentage points, while disapproval has grown nine percentage points.

The Climate Leadership plan was released by Premier Rachel Notley in late November, 2015, and includes a carbon tax that would start in 2017, a plan to phase-out coal-fired power generation by 2030, and reduce methane emissions by 45 percent by 2025.

“Edmonton tended to show the highest degree of support, but it still wasn’t a majority, or even a plurality of Edmontonians who are in favour of the new Carbon Levy,” Marc Henry, ThinkHQ Public Affairs said Thursday.

Results found those who approve of the carbon levy are mostly under 35-years-old (42 percent), and had graduated from university (35 percent).

As for their voting intention in the next provincial election, 84 percent of those who approve of the carbon levy said they plan to vote for the NDP in the next election, five percent plan to vote for the Wildrose Party, and ten percent plan to vote for the Progressive Conservatives.

In poll results from December 2015, approval and disapproval was about even at 44 percent for each, with eleven percent unsure.

The results came from a study where 1331 individuals were polled through an online research panel conducted by Voice of Alberta and Angus Reid Forum held between September 14 and 19, 2016 – the margin of error, associated with a probability sample of that size, is 2.7 percentage points.
