Months after a fire destroyed parts of Fort McMurray, the Alberta government said it would hire a third party to carry out an independent review of the emergency response to that disaster.

The province said the review will look at the provincial support that was provided to the municipality, the evacuations, and the services provided to evacuees, to determine what went well and where improvements could be made.

Similar reviews were carried out in the wake of the two other major disasters to take place in Alberta in the last five years – the wildfire in Slave Lake in 2011, and the flooding in southern Alberta in 2013.

A request for proposals has been issued for a contractor to carry out this review, it’s expected a report will be completed by the summer of 2017.
