Edmonton police said Friday that thousands of dollars had been donated to help cover the veterinary bills for a dog that was mauled over the weekend, along with its owner.

Police said in a Tweet Friday that $6,500 had been raised to cover the bill of the dog – described as a Papillon-type breed – who suffered serious bite wounds and vertebrae damage in Sunday’s attack.

Earlier in the week, police said fundraising efforts were underway to help cover the high cost of treating the injured dog – the bill was expected to be between $8,000 and $10,000. Meanwhile, the veterinary clinic treating the pet was still collecting donations.

On Sunday at about 9 a.m., a 54-year-old woman was walking her small dog in an alley near 112 Avenue and 101 Street.

Police said the woman and her dog were surrounded and attacked by a group of medium to large-sized dogs – the woman suffered serious dog bites to her body, but she was recuperating in hospital following hours of surgery.

According to police, the dog underwent additional procedures Friday.
